Ankle Pain can occur from an acute injury (twisting or rolling of ankle) or can be associated chronic instability due to poor rehabilitation of previous injury. The most common aspect of the ankle injured is the outer aspect. This is because they have 3 small ligaments holding bones together and providing stability. However they are not strong enough and are easily injured when a person rolls or twists their ankle. Depending in the severity, swelling and bruising may be evident days after the injury and may prevent the person from walking.
The risks factors that increase the likelihood of you suffering from ankle pain include:
· Previous ankle injury
· Poor ankle proprioception (ability to know where your foot is in space)
· Inappropriate footwear for sport/activity
· Supinated foot type
